Daily home & garden tip: Maintenance for espaliers

Some general housekeeping now will pay real dividends to those of you who have built espaliers, Belgian fences or fruiting walls. After months of sunshine, rain, wind and varying temperatures, the green garden tape I use to tie the branches to the support needs loosening, retying or replacing.

This work may need to be done every year or two, depending on the plant's growth rate.

Without good anchoring, fruit trees or shrubs grown on wire or other support will sag or break.
