Daily home & garden tip: Stay safe at home

fireextinguisher.jpgView full sizeIt's not enough to own a fire extinguisher. It needs to be located near the stove where you can find it right away even if you're in a panic.

Safety needs to be practiced regularly -- look both ways before crossing the street, hold the rail as you go down stairs, fasten your seat belt in the car -- but there are some simple things you can do once or infrequently to help you and your family stay safe in your home.

IN THE HOME

• Install motion-detector lights at front and back entries.

• Install covers on outlets.

• Put nonskid backing on rugs.

• Put protective grills and screens in front of fireplace.

• Inspect chimney annually.

IN THE KITCHEN

• Keep fire extinguisher near stove, and know how to use it.

• Replace exhaust hood filters over stove every three months.

• Post emergency phone numbers.

• Use childproof locks on cabinets.

• Lock poisons away from kids and pets.

IN BEDROOMS

• Place smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors near bedrooms on every floor. Check batteries regularly.

• Establish and practice a fire escape plan.

• Keep a flashlight near the bed. Not only is it useful in case of power failure, but also you can use it to light your way if you get up in the night and don't want to awaken your partner by turning on a lamp.
