Daily home & garden tip: Hold off on pruning kiwi vines

kiwivine.jpg

If your kiwi vine is growing vigorously, you may be tempted to cut it back now. Don't do it until late February in Portland, after most of the risk of a hard freeze is past, but before the buds break (open).

The freshly cut ends of kiwi branches can be badly injured during hard freezes; they may die back a foot or more. However, pruning after buds open causes buds to break off and sap to rain down on the pruner.
