Daily home & garden tip: Some edibles can thrive in shady gardens

As the days grow shorter and darker, many gardeners like to look ahead and think  about what to grow next year. If adding edibles is on your mental list, consider this: While many edible plants require full or nearly full sun, many do very well with much less light.

Here are the light requirements of some of the most common edibles.

Full sun to part shade:

  • Alpine strawberry
  • Autumn olive
  • Barberry
  • Blueberries
  • Elderberry
  • 'Emerald Carpet' raspberry
  • Goumi
  • Grapes
  • Highbush cranberry
  • Kiwi (hardy)
  • Medlar
  • Pawpaw
  • Peach/nectarine
  • Pear
  • Pineapple guava
  • Plum
  • Raspberry
  • Red huckleberry
  • Sea berry
  • Serviceberry
  • Wolfberry

Mostly shade:

  • Clumping bamboo (
  • Evergreen huckleberry (also takes full sun or part shade, but grows larger and bears most heavily in shade)
  • Japanese wineberry
  • Wintergreen
