Wondering about that mischief-maker who left piles of dirt on your lawn or flowerbed? Pocket gophers, moles and voles all tunnel, but they differ in what they feed on.
Gophers eat vegetables, tree roots, bark, vine and pigweed, while moles are insectivores that eat earthworms and grubs. Voles, which are much like mice, munch on vegetation, such as grass and tree bark.
You can tell which has been active in your yard simply by the kind of mess they leave behind. If you see a horseshoe shape of scattered dirt around a hole, it's a gopher. A volcano-like hill of dirt means it's a mole.
push up dirt from below, so the hole is never visible.

dirt piled up around it is likely to be the work of a vole, which likes to gnaw on grass.
