Daily home & garden tip: Minimize aches and pains from gardening

Keep tools sharp to make the work easier.

It's fall planting season, and weekend warriors are likely to rack up some aches and pains in the garden. Here are some tips for staying in good shape:

• Stretch before and after gardening.

• Wear footwear that supports the foot, not just any old pair of sneakers.

• Change tasks frequently.

• Drink lots of water while you work.

• Keep tools sharpened; using dull tools takes a toll on your body.

• Use the right tool for the job: Instead of trying to dig a big hole with a trowel, get the shovel.

• When pruning, be wary of twisting joints -- turn your entire body to the task.
