My reasons for changing initially units were very simple. LifeTime Maps & Traffic, a 5-inch screen, and a feature that lets you scroll in 2D mode with only one-click! The TomTom 340s can do some of the scrolling through a 2D-map, but it is more difficult to operate, and the cost of an update map didn't make it practical to keep.
Off the bat, I can say, I didn't like the unit. The first very major feature moticed is the the missing current road displayed while in route. Lots of research, and all the Garmin Nuvi and many of the Magellan have left this critical feature off. Some forums suggest the feature was removed because of customer complaints. Read below for a very good solution within the unit!
That being said, I re-looked my options to the TomTom XL, XXL, and VIA models. The "VIA" models are set to replace the XL and XXL units. After lots of reading, the software driving all VIA models lacks itinerary planning. Why is this so important? Basically the TomTom units fail at remembering a "custom" set of directions to a specific location. The work-around has been to set up an series of "go to" places that force the unit to get to your final destination which you desire. The second major reason for using itinerary has to do with the TomTom limited maximum of 48 favorites to be saved in the unit, which is quickly used up. The categories for saving itinerary cannot be "put together" into custom groups, like for example "relatives" - especially if they live in different states or towns more than 50 miles away for example. So with the VIA models, the entire itinerary is almost totally crippled, and the POI system and Favorites is a disaster! The Garmin 1450LTM has moved the visual "Turn-by-Turn" display in 3D and 2D to the main display, making the Garmin 1450LTM easier to use. The TomTom "VIA" models currently are loaded with bugs from all directions. The basic firmware is not complete, and it is pretty much a disaster as a viable product. Forums are loaded with distressed customers from all angles.
After about 2 days of looking through all options, I revisited the Garmin 1450LTM, I decided to see what the unit would do. Lots! Turn-by-turn picture 2D slides, and turn-by-turn directions in 3-D from the main navigation page. The junction displays are impressive (ships with 50MB of Junction Views, but has a microSD slot to you can install a microSD card and download the 778MB file for more Junction views across all the maps!) The favorite and POI allow 1,000 user entries, and with more information for each custom POI (Name, Address, Phone, Category, etc.) huge plus! It has an easy choice ability to group POI exactly as you want them. Managing POI entries, categories with these enhaced tools make it a great GPS. Making custom "add-ons" to your route, simple! Soon as you choose another location (address, cross-street, POI), the unit asks if you would like to add it to your list! That simple. If you want to use the new POI, you are asked if you would like to replace your destination, answer "yes" and your done! So easy, and so intuitive.
The organization of the 6+ million locations is so much better organized, it's amazing. Food is even broken down into categories (American, Chinese, Fast Food), a huge plus! If you want them grouped together, just select "All Food." This is similar to my first MIO C310x (which I liked a lot, but couldn't get new maps for it prior to buying the TomTom, still like the MIO 310x - features way ahead of its time, still own my original from 2006, but maps are years out of date).
The "intuitive" nature of the Garmin is outstanding!!! TomTom's have tons of features, but having spent a bit more time with the Garmin, the features that I wanted are better organized, and mostly all here! In fact, the features are located in places you would expect. I had to fight this for a day after leaving the TomTom behind, but the upgrade to this unit is defiantly a huge advantage.
Pros:
*Brighter Screen Display (and easily managed brightness).
*Turn-by-turn direction in 3D for main page, and 1-click for 2-D (you just have to set it up this way, very easy).
*Full iternary, including either all written with arrows, or 1/2 complete map of left, and 1/2 detailed text on the right. (Very nice feature).
*POI allow 1,000 custom entries, and 10 routes. (TomTom 48 Favorites, and no itinerary on all "VIA" models that replace the XL, and XXL).
*2GB of internal memory.
*MicroSD memory slot for more memory.
*Extremely easy to generate multiple "stops" on a single trip (through town, or through your trip!), either by adding Street addresses or POI, or both. (very easy!!!).
*This GPS really shows how behind TomTom and Magellan are in the GPS world. TomTom is seval quarters behind in its posted firmware, itinerary addition, and overall difficult menu system.
Cons:
*I would be much happier if the road that I was driving could be displayed. One of the forums said to "press to car" avatar - which does bring up the location. I tried this option, and it works
well, but takes a few seconds to load. Not a bad trade for all the great new features.
*In worst case, you can cancel the route, which then displays the current street, and then press "where to?" and select "Recently found" or "Favorites" if you really needed to know the current street, however pressing the car avitar is sufficent, and gives quite a bit more information, and is easy to move back to the main display GPS menu.
*Less information displayed on the main page. TomTom supports Travel Time to text turn, Distance to next turn, Overall travel time, and a single click to go to your custom menu.
*Corrections to the map cannot be marked from the main screen like the TomTom (speed of travel change, etc.)
Overall an excellent GPS.
As I wanted a GPS with a larger screen. After reading many reviews and shopping around for a larger screen GPS I included all makes and models in my research including new 7-inch GPS available from other all companies. I decided that a 7-inch would obstruct my view.
I finally decided on the purchase of the 5-inch Garmin Nuvi 1450LMT via Amazon.com. I was immediately blown away with ease of use, screen size, easy to read screen (even under direct sun). I gave it a good test run while I am in Florida and it works great. I will be returning North in 3 weeks when I will have a chance to give it a better test.
After the purchase, I quickly updated the maps which was a breeze. The system and maps were updated quickly. Time will tell if the maps are accurate. From my experience with Garmin I found the maps fairly accurate.
Also my new nüvi 1450LMT automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands and deliveries. Although I have not used it yet I cannot wait to try the trip log which provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map. This may come handy when travelling unexpected new roads and want to return at a later time.
A note of interest for GPS users. I remember spending the month of January 2000 in Phoenix, Arizona with my brother. I was with him when he purchased a top-of-the-line Garmin. In those days, not that long ago you may agree, that Garmin GPS, with a very tiny screen, no audio street turning, electronically complex to setup and use, heavy and bulky which cost my brother close to $1,500. He had to purchase the North America map for $200 which did not include many small town and country roads. I remember how we marveled and found this GPS great. I remember going and navigating around the Grand Canyon and how it could leave "bread crumbs" to mark where we had been on uncharted small roads. We both found that GPS so wonderful....and look at where we are today with these Global Positioning System. GPS systems are, in my view, on of the best electronic device invented. Now, if only the satellites they use do not fall out of the sky....all will be OK to get from point "A" to point "B".
My new Garmin has many more advanced features, larger screen and a much smarter device and cost me under $200 with lifetime maps and traffic.
By the way, Amazon makes purchasing merchandise from them so convenient, easy, efficient while realizing a saving. Try it, you will be totally satisfied.
Top reviews from other countries
I started shopping around and decided that I wanted a 5" screen to make life easier. I picked up a TomTom 5" unit at a big box store and tried it out on a 2 week trip through Alberta and BC. The screen was nice but the maps and Points of Interest that were stored on the device were really lacking. It was missing some pretty basic and large tourist attractions we were trying to find and ended having to use google on our cell phones to find certain attractions. Any yes, I updated the GPS with the latest update from TomTom before we left. That was the second concern with the TomTom. It has a limited amount of internal memory and the existing maps were using up nearly 100% of the space available. This was a concern to me as it really didn't leave any room if they decided to offer upgraded maps or features in the future. I returned the unit when we got back from vacation.
I waited for the boxing day sales and found the Garmin nüvi 1450LMT 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator on for $178 which was a decent deal considering it had the lifetime map updates. I've used it on a few trips out of town and I really like it. The screen is very bright and responds quickly. It also locks onto the satellites fairly quickly. The Garmin menus are easy to navigate through so plotting a trip is very easy. It also has the FM Traffic feature that I had not used before. I was skeptical about it but it did alert us to some traffic delays when traveling around Montreal and a highway closure coming into Ottawa, routing us around the affected area. Another nice feature of the bigger screen is you can place the GPS in the middle of the dash so the passenger can see it as well. With my old smaller one I'd have to keep it close to me on the left side of the steering wheel so I could see what turns were coming up. Makes things a bit safer plus they can re-program it if need be while on the move.
When not in use, it is pretty slim and fits in my wife's purse without taking up too much room. Just make sure you get a decent case to protect the screen from getting scratched when not in use. It's worth the $20 - $30 you'll spend.
So far, I'm glad I ditched the TomTom and went back to the Garmin.
