You know what I like about Emma Stone and Dave McCaryās engagement? So much! I like that they dated quietly for two solid years. I like that HE announced their engagement with a cute Instagram post. Emma doesnāt have an official IG, although Iād be willing to bet she probably has a finsta where she posts photos of all the cakes she bakes and photos of, like, cool, arty New York scenes. But most of all, what I like is that Dave went a bit offbeat and unconventional with the engagement ring. Considering the ring is sort of a blur in the engagement announcement, I didnāt pay much attention to what was really going on. As it turns out, Dave chose a very delicate pearl engagement ring from a hip (or hipster?) Brooklyn jewelry store, Catbird. From People Mag:
Though they havenāt shared a clearer shot of the ring yet, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that sheās wearing the Kataoka Winter Pearl ring from New York City jewelry store, Catbird. The trendy company has two locations in Brooklyn and a third in Lower Manhattan, and has a slew of celebrity fans including Meghan Markle, Taylor Swift and Emma Watson.
The ring, which retails for $4,780, was made in the workshop of renowned Tokyo-based jeweler Yoshinobu Kataoka, and features 8 millimeters of āuntreated Akoya pearl,ā 0.37 carat diamonds and solid 18-karat gold, according to the brandās website.
āMilgrain edges, diamond cutting, and other finishing touches are all applied by hand,ā the Winter Pearl Ring product description states. āKataoka uses the highest quality conflict-free noble metals, diamonds, and natural untreated precious gems.ā
Iām including photos – taken from Catbirdās site – below. The ring is gorgeous and I love the delicacy of the gold with those tiny diamonds, and the surround of the pearl. Iāve always loved pearl jewelry, but Iāve always been wary of pearl rings just becauseā¦ a pearl āsits up.ā It canāt help but sit up, itās round. But that means your ring will get snagged on everything and if youāre a klutz, youāll probably bang it into half of the doors you encounter and more. Iām not trying to be negative! Itās a beautiful, unconventional choice and it āsuitsā Emma perfectly, and Iām happy sheās with a guy who knew what kind of ring would suit her personality. Iām just saying, sheās going to bang that poor pearl into a lot of things in the first year.
Also: I went hunting though Catbirdās Instagram, looking for any other photos of this ring and while I didnāt find that particular ring, I would be happy with about 90% of their selection. Whoever is curating Catbirdās collection has amazing taste. Really, really beautiful, small, gorgeously-made pieces.

I am definitely a pearl lover and have been breaking out my strands this fall with sweaters, and loving it. I never would’ve thought to get one for an engagement ring, but I think it’s lovely if that’s what you like.

It is lovely. I’m too clumsy to wear something like that, with the gemstone so high up in the setting, but pearl earrings in that same style would be something I’d buy.
I have a beautiful pearl ring, inherited, and was told that the pearl is actually a replacement from when the original pearl was knocked out of it’s setting. Having said that, I LOVE this ring and I’m so happy for her. The ring has such a delicate, vintage vibe, and I would be happy to keep my hand in my pocket to protect it lol It’s beautiful, and a classic ring to wear.

Same. I don’t think diamonds are required for engagement rings, but I do think it’s important that they be suitable for daily wear. I wanted something I wouldn’t have to pull off all the time because it was too delicate. I know I would punch a pearl to dust within months, as much as I knock my hands on doors and walls and table edges.
It is a lovely little ring and I love delicate and finely made jewelry so I appreciate those aspects of it. This just would have been part of my wedding day jewelry.

Love it! But my engagement ring is also a pearl so I’m a tad biased!
My college roommate wanted a pearl ring for her engagement ring, and her future mother-in-law talked her out of it, saying that it would snag and catch on things and that it would eventually shatter from rough treatment. She always says that her MIL’s insistence that she forgo her first choice, and her future husband’s agreement with his mom, should have been the tip-off that the marriage wasn’t going to last, and sure enough, she and her husband split after seven years. About four years after their divorce, she met a lovely man to whom she’s now been married for sixteen years. He gave her a pearl ring at her request — a gorgeous ring, set in platinum with two small diamonds, one at each side. And that ring has lasted sixteen years and two rambunctious kids with nary a scratch or chip.
Love this story! I have a pushy MIL myself, but I luckily keep her at a safe distance. And I got a ring I love.

All the comments about pearls cracking got me thinking about my college roommate and how her ring is faring. Well, turns out I was wrong: the pearl has been replaced twice. I e-mailed her, and she wrote:
“Girlfriend! I never told you this but the pearl in my ring has been replaced twice. The first time I was helping out with a church dinner and I was making salad dressing and I guess vinegar really does a number on pearls because it started to bubble and look really weird. [Husband] was really sweet about it and bought a new pearl for the ring. He offered to get me a whole new ring but you know I love this setting. The second time I don’t know what happened, I looked at my hand and the pearl wasn’t there. It fell out or got knocked out or something. [Husband] replaced it again! I picked a winner the second time around!”
I love her dearly, and she really does have a terrific husband. Sooooo … I guess the moral of the story is, if you like pearls, you might want to stay away from vinaigrette and get a generous husband.

When I was in college my bf got me a pearl ring…and then I got a giant blister on my finger while cooking and I couldn’t take it off for weeks.
While waitressing, my boss decided to get creative and said I HAD to bleach down counters, which is something the serving staff never did. I begged him to not make this unique request, because I couldn’t get my ring off because of my blister and the chemicals would ruin the ring. He denied me, made me wash with bleach and no gloves, and 1/2 of the pearl disappeared.
It really upset me and felt so unjust. The boyfriend that gave me that ring 20 years ago is still my man, and i still have the destroyed ring.

Pearls are not suitable for daily wear because they are too soft. It will be destroyed in about a year if she wears it everyday. I wonder if this is her main engagement ring and if so, they didnāt do enough research.
Pearls are lovely, but they are really sensitive to daily life. A pearl ring isn’t something you can “never take off”–it has to be kept free of perfume, soap, hot/cold water, getting knocked around. If it’s an engagement ring she’s willing to take off regularly, it’s really pretty, but it’s going to spend a lot of time off of her finger. But she probably has to take off jewelry a lot for her job anyway.

Yes, you have to be ok with knowing you’re going to be replacing it, and not be sentimental about having the original stone. Ok for rich people who can afford the lifelong maintainance.

I like the look. Beautiful choice. However, with rings you should go with a Mohs hardness of at least 7.5. It is very likely the pearl will be damaged. Pearls are also sensitive to anything acidic and will be damaged in something as common as vinegar.
I wanted a pearl engagement ring but everyone said they were just too fragile for everyday wear on the hand. Now Iām regretting that, but itās been 20 years so my husband probably would give me another ring as a gift. Probably not one for $4K. š I love pearls and have about ten strands.

My fiancĆ© proposed with a pearl engagement ring a few months ago because itās my birthstone. I love it and it IS delicate, but I donāt wear it at work (a hospital where I need to constantly use soap and sanitizer) or doing work around the house. Mine is much smaller and doesnāt sit up nearly as much, though. I think hers is beautiful and if sheās careful she wonāt have an issue.
Ugh, that ring is awful lol. But I don’t do dainty. Anything. Dainty and traditional is my polar opposite. I like wide, chunky, artisan looking jewelry. Something Byzantiny lol. But she looks gorgeous in that photo, and happy and the ring truly suits. Sometimes I find myself jealous of girly girls, but alas we are who we are.

My two sonsā birthstones are sapphire and pearl; mine is diamond. I have several rings and pendants that combine those three and I love them!
Pearls are classic and timeless but I would be hesitant to wear a ring every day. I do wear my pearl stud earrings all the time though – they just always look good.

I have pearl earrings that look much like that ring without the “wings” on the sides. I wear them all the time and last time I visited my mom, she gave me her strand of pearls and I have a beautiful double strand bracelet with diamonds and gold dividers. I worry a little about that bracelet. I also have several smaller strands of smaller pearls.
I don’t think I really loved pearls when I was young though as in teens and 20s.
I was probably around 30 when I fell for them.

Platinum requires less maintenance than gold. It’s pretty solid, prong-wise.

I love pearls and have many in my collection. One ring that I had made back when I was a teenager and I rarely wear it these days because I don’t like things that stick up like that. Because I know it would get bashed. I have a lot of pearl necklaces and bracelets, but you do have to be careful with perfumes and stuff getting on them.
Instead of a diamond ring, my mom received a classic graduated natural pearl necklace from my dad back in 1947. It’s so beautiful! She took good care of it and now I have it in my jewelry box.
The little diamonds are nice, but I don’t care for prong settings at all. Bezel all the way. Also, I prefer a wider band on a ring, mostly due to longevity I guess. On the Catbird site, they do show some nice dainty rings, but the deal breaker for me is all those prongs, so I won’t be purchasing anything from them. The little opal rings were nice, just wish the stones were set in a bezel.
There are some non-diamond bezel set rings on the site. Not many, but some.

I love pearls, but they really aren’t a great choice for an engagement ring or any other ring that you wear daily. Cultured pearls are basically a shell bead with a fairly thin layer of nacre around it. Nacre scratches easily and will wear off in spots that are subjected to repeated friction over time. This is one ofbthe reasons they put knots between the pearls on a necklace.
Ideally, from a durability point of view, 7 or above on the Mohs scale for any engagement ring stone. And not one that cleaves easily either.

I absolutely love the ring but not as an engagement ring that she will wear frequently. Not only do pearls get banged up so easily but they are easily damaged by a variety of things, including water. It is gorgeous but I would want to wear it as a right-hand ring.

And to solve the problem of the pearl falling off the setting, many times a pearl has a hole drilled into its base and it’s set on a post that soldered to the setting and glued as well. That’s the case with my pearl ring which also has prongs around the pearl.
