Daily home & garden tip: Make a lightweight garden carryall

Got weeds? After pulling them, you'll want something to carry them to your compost pile or yard debris cart, and if you're like us, your other totes are either shredded or misplaced.

So consider making this lightweight carryall from materials you may have on hand. The basic recipe is courtesy of Martha Stewart, but feel free to vary it according to the materials you find.

You'll need two yards of 60-inch-wide cotton canvas or other sturdy fabric or tarp; and two closet poles or old broom handles about an inch thick and cut to a length of about 62 inches. Sturdy bamboo poles would work, too.

Fold under the 60-inch ends of the canvas, and make a 2-inch-wide pocket at each end using a sewing machine. Slide the poles inside to form handles. If you prefer not to use a sewing machine, you can staple the cloth to the poles.

To use, spread the cloth on the ground and toss cuttings into it. Pull the handles together, and carry.
