Daily home & garden tip: Painting a metal radiator is a summertime chore

radiator.JPGView full sizeThis radiator is too gorgeous to paint.

If you want to paint a metal radiator cabinet, you've got extra prep work ahead of you. But now's the ideal time to do it.

First, sand the finish heavily, or at least enough to reduce the gloss of the old finish and to roughen it a bit.

Apply an oil-based primer such as Kilz.

Finish with an oil-based enamel. Be sure to do this only when the metal is cold, in the heating off-season.
