Daily home & garden tip: How to select a watering can

When you're shopping for a good watering can, look for balance, durability and high quality. Here are tips for selecting a can:

• Do you want plastic or metal? Size for size, the same quality metal cans are usually more expensive than plastic. Long-term, metal fares better outdoors, but plastic Swiss-made Dramm cans are treated to withstand ultraviolet rays, which usually degrade plastic.

• Don't buy one until you've filled it with water and checked for leaks (or take it home and save the receipt until you've checked it out). Check welds and seams. Also, you need to know if it is well-balanced and easy to pour when full. Water is heavy - about 8 pounds per gallon.

• Make sure the handle is comfortable. Look for sharp burrs and jagged edges.

• Does the can have a long or short spout? If you think you need the reach, try it out to be sure it is easy to use.

• If the can comes with a rose (perforated nozzle), check it out. If you find a good can with a good rose, be sure the holes fit your needs. When you pour, observe whether the shower from the rose is light or heavy.

• If you'll be mixing fertilizer in the can, the opening should allow for easy stirring.

• Watering cans come in many shapes and colors, and if you buy one that appeals to you, you'll enjoy using it more -- and probably be less likely to forget to water.
