Outsourcing companies that once sent legal work overseas are hiring U.S. lawyers and paying salaries ranging from $50,000 to $80,000.

The development is “a glimmer of light” for young lawyers battered by the difficult economy, the New York Times reports. The paycheck is comparable to lawyer salaries in smaller cities, but there may be additional benefits such as equity stakes in the companies and better chances at an eventual management position.

The story has these developments:

• Last fall Thomson Reuters purchased one of India’s largest outsourcing firms, Pangea3, and recently opened an office in suburban Dallas that can house 400 people.

• Integreon, which operates overseas in countries such as India and South Africa, is hiring lawyers in Fargo, N.D., and expects to have about 600 U.S. employees by the end of the year.

• About 240 employees of UnitedLex’s 700 employees are in the United States, and it’s planning to expand when it moves to a new facility in Overland Park, Kan.
