Daily home & garden tip: How to commission artwork for your home

You've decided to take the big step: Commission a piece of art for your home. Here are some tips on how to approach this project.

1. Familiarize yourself

with the artist's work.

Go to galleries where he or she shows or visit the artist's studio. Ask to see photos of previous work.

2. Invite the artist to your home

to see the type of home, the colors, the decor and other evidence of your taste. Show where you intend to put the piece so the artist can measure the area and get a feel for the surroundings.

3. Get to know the artist personally.

Can you work with this person? Does the artist listen to your ideas?

4. Show the artist pictures

of artwork and furniture you like. You can cut photos out of magazines, copy them from books, etc. You also could make a sketch and bring paint and fabric samples to show the blend of colors you think would look best.

5. Consider a contract.

It should state, among other things, the price and completion date.

6. Give the artist a wish list

of what you would like and your budget. Most will work with you to create something that you will love and can afford.
