Here are some thrifty ideas for using an old, worn-out hose that will benefit the gardener in spring.
• Save your feet: Use 3-inch-long pieces to pad the top edges of a shovel. Slit the pieces down the side and slip them over the edges where you push with your feet.
• Slide a slit section of hose over the blade of an ax or saw as a guard.
• Use a 6-inch piece of hose to create self-opening pliers, or to keep old pruning shears that have lost their spring from locking up. Bend the hose so the ends fit over both handles of the pliers or shears. The springiness of the hose will open the handles unless you squeeze them closed.
• Use hose to cushion brackets for storing hoses and soaker hoses during the winter.
