With a former soldier as head teacher, it is not surprising that children at Ashgate Primary School are learning all about survival skills.

But as well as being taught how to find water, shelter and light a fire, they will soon know how to gut, pluck and prepare a pheasant for cooking in the wild.

A day of survival training is being held at the school in Derby, culminating in a bird being cooked by the head, Peter Seargent, who learnt his skills as an infantry soldier in the jungles of Borneo.
