By 2022, Alfa Romeo will do the right thing by resurrecting the 8C nameplate for a rather special performance product. This name was born from racing, introduced in 1931 and used up until WWII, only to be relaunched again in 2003 on the concept for the 2007 8C Competizione. But while the modern 8C was a Maserati-based, front-engined crowdpleaser available both as a coupe and a convertible, Alfa's upcoming 8C will be a much more serious proposition.

The new mid-engined Alfa Romeo 8C will be built around a carbon fiber monocoque (just like the current 4C), powered by the combination of a midship twin-turbo engine and an electrified front axle. The combined output of the system will be over 700 horsepower, propelling it to 60 mph in under three seconds, according to today's FCA five-year planning presentation.

Joining the 600-plus-horsepower all-wheel drive 2+2 GTV coupe at the top of Alfa's lineup, the 8C will compliment Ferrari's no doubt even more powerful mid-engined offerings in the next decade, while Maserati spearheads the group's electrification efforts.
