Satsuma football coach Lonnie Rawlins resigns after 3 seasons

SATSUMA, Alabama -- Satsuma football coach Lonnie Rawlins has resigned, leaving the program after going 10-20 in three seasons leading the Gators.

"I wasn't able to turn  it around and felt like it's time for someone else to have a chance to change it," Rawlins said today.

Satsuma has been one of southwest Alabama's perpetually struggling programs. None of the school's nine coaches left with a winning record, and the Gators have never won an AHSAA playoff game.

Rawlins' resignation leaves several local schools in search mode for a new football coach, including Baldwin County, B.C. Rain, Clarke County and Jackson. Former Jackson coach Jeff Kelly -- who resigned last week -- is expected to be hired as the new coach at Saraland tonight.

Rawlins succeeded Kelly as Satsuma's head coach 3 years ago.

Rawlins will remain at Satsuma during the spring semester as a teacher. He said he plans to seek an assistant coaching job.
