Letter to the editor:

Xenophobia not what unites us

In the Aug. 5 letter “Empathy for Americans,” the writer argued that immigrants come only for freebies paid by American taxpayers.

The Indian businessman Anand Mahindra said, “If you aren’t humble, whatever empathy you claim is false and probably results from arrogance and the desire to control.” Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird” said it best: “You never really understand a person until you consider his point of view ... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

It doesn’t say first come, first served in the Constitution.
