Fundraising: Henley 24-hour Race

Last week, in a moment of utter madness, I decided to enter the Henley 24-hour race, which is taking place on the 8th June this year.

The race itself will involve running a five-mile loop over and over (and over) for 24 hours. I’ll be able to rest and refuel whenever I wish, however whilst I can stop, the clock doesn’t, so the plan is to just keep on going. I’ve set myself a target of at least 13 laps – that’s over 100km.

As anyone who knows me knows, I am a very keen runner. I’ve run six marathons with another coming up this May, but I’ve never attempted a 24-hour race before. Is it even possible? As my brother said to me, it’s hard enough staying awake that long!

As this is such an epic task, I will be doing the Henley 24-hour challenge in support of two fantastic charities.

The first, The Lymphoma Research Trust, is a cause very close to my heart. My Granny sadly passed away from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1997. And then, in 2016 my Mum was also diagnosed with the same disease. Mum recently finished treatment and is, thankfully, in really good health.

The Lymphoma Research Trust funds research into the treatment of lymphoma and makes grants to medical researchers who organise clinical trials.

The clinical trials assess whether new treatments work better than existing ones, and test different combinations of treatments to see which are most effective. The information gained from these trials increases their knowledge of lymphoma and enables patients to be treated more effectively.

The second cause I am raising funds for is TheGivingMachine – the charity I work for. It really is a fantastic charity that helps thousands of other good causes throughout the UK raise funds for free when supporters do their online shopping via TheGivingMachine website. They receive sales commission from purchases, which they then pass on to the good causes.

TheGivingMachine has literally created a machine that enables people to enjoy giving as a behaviour choice to support their favourite schools, charities and community groups, but like all machines it requires some maintenance! TheGivingMachine is hoping to purchase some new lap-tops for the team, so that it can run more efficiently and continue to raise free funds for lots of good causes throughout the country.

If you would like to help me raise funds for these two amazing charities, then please consider donating to my Virgin Giving fund. I promise I’ll be working hard for it 🙂
