With 10 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in the city, now Puneites can get an hourly update of weather conditions in any part of the city from mid-June.

Three AWS are already operational in the city and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will install seven more across the city. “We already have the equipment ready and we should be able to install the same by second week of June,” said additional director general R D Vashishtha. “Hourly data from these stations will have much precision. We aim at better and more accurate data with these stations,” he added.

The IMD will finalise the sites shortly,he said. At present, the three AWS are at Shivajinagar,Pashan and Rajgurunagar while the other sites being considered are Sinhagad,Muktangan,Lohegaon,Hadapsar,Satara Road and PCMC areas. The hourly check will be available on the IMD website: MD_www.imd.gov.in. The services will be under “Hourly AWS data” and by clicking the link an hourly weather update can be obtained.

With the aim to give a real time picture of the weather, the increased number of stations will be able to put up more accurate data. Currently, data from 105 AWS is uploaded on the website. The AWS will give information on rainfall, temperature, mean sea level pressure,dew-point temperature,dry-bulb temperature, wind speed and wind direction.
