Exclusive Editions: Tomoo Gokita's Pop-Surrealist Style

Dear ArtWeLove enthusiasts,

It's Laurence today, introducing this week's edition. One of the most thrilling things about running ArtWeLove is that I get to spotlight international artists. And those of you who know me are well aware of my long-time addiction for Japanese contemporary art.

It’s actually with a print from now famous Japanese artist Takashi Murakami that I started my personal collection 12 years ago (at the time, dealer Emmanuel Perrotin was selling Murakami's prints for 100 euros each!)

But there is more to the contemporary Japanese art scene than leading artists like Murakami, Kusama, Sugimoto, and Kawara. This is why I'm excited to feature two very distinctive archival pigment prints from Tokyo-based artist Tomoo Gokita.

Born in 1969, Tomoo is widely known in Japan, yet he only recently gained recognition among the art-world elite, thanks to the support of ATM Gallery (New York) and Honor Fraser Gallery (Los Angeles). His works quickly got featured in exciting group shows, including Mail Orders Monsters, curated by former Deitch Gallery director Kathy Grayson. Collectors like Lance Armstrong publicly called Tomoo Gokita “one of his favorite emerging artists” on Facebook.

Mostly self-taught, Tomoo is as comfortable with ink and charcoal drawings as he is with painting. He’s known for his "abstracted" figurative paintings, his sober palette of black, white, and grays, as well as his spirited - and often sexually charged, imagery.

Night And Day is a great example of Tomoo's unique style. Take a look and notice how Tomoo explores what happens when forms are broken down and manipulated. To us, it looks and feels like a Pop-Surrealist explosion.

What we love about Tomoo is that he resists temptations to stick to one signature style - which too many great artists feel pressured to comply to. Hot Dog is a good example of Tomoo's most recent explorations toward a sharper, pop-like aesthetic.

And this is exactly why we’re featuring both works together. They are incredibly fascinating on their own rights, and they show the breadth and depth of an artist who never ceases to experiment, explore, and surprise.

If like us, you love them together, you’ll be happy to know that we’re offering these works for sale as a diptych for only $105 (petite sizes), $140 (medium sizes), and $420 (large sizes).

Happy collecting!
