The world’s biggest and most tourist friendly cities are also tops in hashtagged mentions on Instagram according to a new listing of the top 30 such places by a website called Hashtag The World.
New York City takes the top spot with 68,040,631 posts with #NYC in 2016. The hashtag was used, on average, 55,190 times a day to add an extra identifier to images related to the Big Apple. According to the report, New York saw a growth rate of 79 percent over last year’s use of the hashtag.
London came in second, about 4 million posts behind New York, with 64,541,551. Paris, Dubai and Istanbul rounded out the top five.
Other U.S. cities to make the cut included Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta and Houston.
L.A. saw the biggest growth rate, with its post count rising 119 percent.
Orlando, Fla., was 29th on the list, presumably on the strength of posts which called out the June 12 nightclub shooting that left 49 people dead.
Seattle Instagrammers and tourists need to do a better job of hashtagging, as the city failed to make the top 30.
