Big Snow Maker Eyes Midwest, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic
January 13, 2019
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Rebecca Huff
A big snow-maker is trekking eastward through the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Several inches of snow will fall across the Nation’s Capital before all is said and done on Sunday evening.
The cause of the wintry trouble is an area of low pressure advancing across the Tennessee Valley and into the Carolinas. Atlantic moisture is streaming northward ahead of the low and into the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley. Coupled with arctic air moving southward from Canada, this is leading to plenty of snowfall across the region.
Snowfall of 5 to 10 inches will be common across the Mid-Atlantic and back into the Ohio Valley, where widespread Winter Storm Warnings stretch from Missouri to Ohio and from North Carolina to Maryland and Delaware. Winter Weather Advisories surround the warnings from Illinois to the Eastern Seaboard. Here, totals of 4 to 7 inches can be expected.
Snowfall accumulations of 20 inches occurred in Montgomery City, Mo., with widespread 7 to 10 inches from Missouri to western Indiana. Where the snow continues steadily, from Ohio to Maryland, totals have reached 2 to 5 inches of snow.
The snow may mix with sleet and freezing rain across Virginia and North Carolina, with ice accretions of up to one-tenth of an inch possible. The wintry weather is likely to make roads particularly slick and dangerous, so use extreme caution if travelling overnight or on Sunday.
