President Trump: 'We're doing the right thing by getting it going, we have to open'

WASHINGTON (SBG) - President Donald Trump sat down with Sinclair Broadcast Group's Sharyl Attkisson to discuss several topics, including the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

Almost 100,000 people have died in recent months from the virus in the United States, with over 1.5 million cases confirmed.

The economy has also taken a major hit, with 39 million Americans applying for unemployment benefits in the past two months.

A recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows just 41% of Americans approve of the president’s job performance.

Despite the numbers, the president continues to praise the work his administration has done in helping to limit the spread of the virus.

"No country has ever done better than what we were doing just a number of months ago and we had to turn it off to save a lot of lives, which we've done. And now we're opening it up again and I think we're going to get our economy back fast."

The president also discussed the current situation between the United States and China.

Trump has blamed China for failing to prevent the pandemic that has killed millions and impacted more than 180 countries around the world.

Earlier this week, he suggested on Twitter, the country is behind a "disinformation and propaganda attack on the United States and Europe."

When asked about how transformative the pandemic has been on the United States, Trump once again pointed the finger at China for failure to contain the virus.

"They could have stopped it. Either it was incompetent or they didn't want to – both are not very acceptable."
