Brian Flynn, deputy head of operations for Eurocontrol, has said that experts need time to evaluate the results gathered from test flights, conducted to check the impact of volcano ash on airplanes.

At the weekend, some European airlines staged test flights through parts of the ash trail blowing from Iceland's erupting volcano, leading to questions about whether the current flight bans in European airspace were necessary.

Eurocontrol co-ordinates air traffic control in 38 nations.
