Palin backs Obey opponent

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Wednesday endorsed the Republican challenger to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Dave Obey, calling the Wisconsin Democrat a “liberal Goliath” with “the dubious distinction of being the author of the stimulus bill.”

Palin described Ashland County District Attorney Sean Duffy, who’s running an uphill campaign against Obey, as a “northern Wisconsin patriot” and urged readers on her Facebook page to donate to Duffy’s campaign.

“If you’re frustrated about the waste in the stimulus bill, please support a solid fiscal conservative who will work to repeal it,” Palin said.

A spokeswoman for Palin clarified that the governor was referring to legislative efforts to rescind unobligated stimulus funds. About a third of the $787 billion spending bill has already been disbursed.

Duffy’s campaign welcomed Palin’s support with open arms.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Gov. Palin’s endorsement,” campaign manager Chris DeRose told POLITICO. “Coming on the anniversary of Chairman Obey’s $787 billion failed stimulus bill is even sweeter.”

Duffy, who appeared on MTV’s “The Real World” in the 1990s, is the first House challenger in 2010 to receive Palin’s formal endorsement. The former vice presidential candidate has also endorsed Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) for reelection.
