Elevation: Barefeet annual festival

Barefeet Theatre launched the 10th edition of their annual festival on Thursday 21 July 2016. This year the colourful, high-energy event is scheduled to take place from the 5th-17th of December 2016.
As with previous year there is a theme and this years’ theme is “Elevation”. Barefeet Programme Director, Taonga Tembo said theme is a reflection of how Barefeet has grown over the years since its inception.
“We will be celebrating ten years of working with vulnerable children in Zambia, enriching the lives of children living in difficult circumstances, especially the children on the street and those with potential to get onto the street,” said Tembo.
Barefeet has promised a spectacular affair for this year’s festival which will see both local and international artists coming together.
Speaking at the launch, Barefeet Chief Executive Officer, Ireen Silweya said Barefeet remains committed to contributing to the development of children on the streets by giving a voice and a platform to speak out through creative arts.

ZEC re-brands itself

The Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) recently changed its name to Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB). This was announced at the launch of their 2017 – 2026 strategic plan.
Speaking at the launch which was held on the 15th of July 2016, Caritas Zambia Executive Director, Samuel Mulafulafu said the new strategic plan was key in providing effective oversight in the running of the Catholic Secretariat and its other institutions.
“The conference remains committed to its authentic evangelization and missionary spirit. ZCCB vision and mission would be promoted among Church’s different institutions with the view of enhancing implementation of its interventions based on a strong Catholic ethos,” Mulafulafu said.
Adding on, ZCCB president Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu said they decided to change the name  in order to remain relevant with time.
“The strategic plan will make the church relevant. Therefore, it looks at social, political and economic relevance. It is road map on how we will operate with the help of the Holy Spirit” he said.

TIZ and RTSA Service Charter launch

When the normal procedure provided by Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) is followed, getting a license with cost you a little over ZMW 300. The going rate (engaging an unregistered middle man/corruption by officer) however, which more people seem to be familiar with costs almost five times the original price, ranging between ZMW 1,500 – 2000. This vice is present in many interfaces where the citizens seek services from the state or statutory bodies.
“Corruption is a cross cutting problem’ – Sampa Kalunga notes Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) Board Vice Chairperson. In an effort to address this problem, TIZ embarked on a project called Transparency and Accountability in Public Service Delivery with support from ZGF. As part of this work TIZ is collaborating with RTSA to help improve transparency and to significantly reduce corrupt activities that distort the delivery of public services related to vehicle licensing and traffic offences.
TIZ and RTSA launched a service charter providing information on how to register motor vehicles, how to obtain a driver’s license, fees for certain services and penalties. In addition, simplified posters have been created to make improve access to information on the topic. The materials provide practical hands-on guidance on what to do in case citizens encounter corruption in road transport service delivery, but also stress citizens responsibility not engage in corrupt activities in order to get a service.
The documents are provided for your use - feel free to share among your network. As Goodwell Lungu (TIZ) Executive Director noted, ‘the destiny of these documents lie in your hands!’
