THE US Ryder Cup team will fly into Cardiff Airport when they arrive in the UK for this year’s tournament.

Following much speculation, Wales’ Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones, confirmed yesterday that a deal has been reached with the chief executive of the PGA of America.

The defending champions are set to arrive in Cardiff on September 27, with the tournament taking place from October 1 to 3 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

The team’s arrival is expected to feature stars including Tiger Woods and is likely to attract considerable interest at the airport.

The golfers will also fly back home from Cardiff Airport on October 4.

Mr Jones said: “This is the first time that Wales has hosted the Ryder Cup so we felt it was important that the American team actually lands in Wales to start their trip.”

Margaret James, head of customer service at Cardiff Airport, added: “We look forward to welcoming the US team to Wales and hosting their travel through the airport.

“The airport has experience of handling travel for large-scale events and will work with all partner organisations to ensure the team’s arrival is as seamless as possible.”
