Former UCLA post player Drew Gordon announced tonight that he will enroll at New Mexico, as first reported by Mark Smith of the Albuquerque Journal.

Gordon hopes to soon begin practicing with the nationally ranked team and will provide Lobos coach Steve Alford with an experienced big man who's expected to become eligible in December 2010.

Eddy Gordon, Drew's father, confirmed the commitment in a text message to ESPN.com, writing that the main factors of the decision were "the style of play and the track record of the coaching staff."

"The type of basketball New Mexico plays, on both offense and defense, is the kind of style I excel in, and coach Alford is a great coach with a great reputation," Drew Gordon told the Journal.

In other words, Alford's style is not Ben Howland's.

In six games as a sophomore, Gordon averaged 11.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game before parting ways with Howland in December after it was determined the two could not work out their differences.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound Gordon was highly recruited as a forward coming out of high school, and he played center for UCLA this season while moving into a starting role.

Gordon enjoyed his recent visit to The Pit to watch the then-undefeated Lobos and also visited Notre Dame, San Diego State and UNLV.
