Panathinaikos are reportedly close to signing Djibril Cissé, despite the player being linked with a move to Tottenham or Stoke. Cissé spent last season on loan at Sunderland but the Wearside club did not take up their option to buy the Marseille striker.
The 27-year-old is now thought to be on the verge of signing a four-year deal with the Greek side. Panathinaikos's president, Nikolas Pateras, confirmed they have agreed a sum with the Ligue 1 club, thought to be around €8m (£6.8m).
"It's a year that we've been interested in Cissé," said Pateras. "There's nothing left but for him to sign. We reached an agreement with Marseille, the player is coming with his wife and will stay two to three days in Greece and, if everything goes well, he will be a Panathinaikos player."
Cissé, who also spent three seasons at Liverpool, had previously expressed a desire to remain in England with a Premier League club.
