Strong majority of Albertans want energy efficiency: poll

A new poll shows a strong majority of Albertans support the creation of energy efficiency in the province.

Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance commissioned Trend Research to conduct the poll, which says 80 per cent of Albertans support the move.

The data specifically says 45 per cent strongly support the idea and 36 per cent moderately support new programs.

“I think the thing with energy efficiency programs in general is that they save more money than they cost,” AEEA Executive Director Jessie Row said. “So this is one of the cheapest ways to reduce emissions while you’re also saving money at the same time, it’s also a great way to stimulate the economy and create jobs.”

Although only 900 Albertans participated in the poll between March 14 and March 31, 2016, the organization stands by its small sample size.

“When you look at the population size of Alberta, 900 is going to get you about a +/-3 per cent uncertainty on the results, so it’s a very sound poll,” Row said. “Trend Research is a very credible organization to have undertaken this poll.”

According to a news release, it was commissioned in response to the government’s climate change plan.
