NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Water systems across the state are turning up with hazardous levels of lead.
Data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New Mexico Environment Department found that 20 small water systems across the state have exceeded the federal standard for lead.
According to the report, it’s been happening for years.
Christus St. Vincent’s hospital in Santa Fe is one of them, with hazardous levels of lead turning up every year since 2011. The systems also include elementary schools in Santa Fe and Quemada, and the State Prison in Roswell.
Officials say the water is safe though, and they’re working to get the lead problem fixed.
