2017 Nissan Titan targets the heart of the half-ton truck market [UPDATE]

UPDATE: A previous version of this story said the Titan XD would be limited to a single bed length and body style. This was incorrect. While it's only available with the Crew Cab, 6.5-foot bed, and diesel engine, the XD trim will eventually be joined by a gas-powered V8, a King Cab/6.5-foot bed, and a Single Cab/eight-foot bed. The post has been edited to reflect this.

The Nissan Titan XD is fat. Like, really fat. Weighing in around 7,000 pounds, it's far heavier than its half-ton competition. With that in mind, the new Titan should be a lot more appealing to people that just want a truck and don't have dreams of heavy-duty hauling.

For those that need a refresher, the new Titan looks a lot like its big brother, but the size differences are immediately noticeable. At 139.8 inches long, the Crew Cab's wheelbase is nearly a full foot shorter than the 151.6-inch XD model, and it's shorter overall, too. The XD is over 20 feet long, but moving to the smaller truck cuts out 14.8 inches of pickup truck from the overall package. This is still going to be a substantial vehicle to pilot down the road, though, since Nissan retained the 79.5-inch width of the XD model.

Perhaps the biggest change from the XD model comes under the hood. Nissan will only be offering its new, gas-powered, 5.6-liter "Endurance" V8 under the smaller Titan's hood ā€“ no Cummins diesel here. The engine is good for 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, which puts it right in the meat of the half-ton pickup segment ā€“ it outguns Ford's 5.0-liter (385 hp and 387 lb-ft) and Chevrolet's 5.3-liter V8s (355hp/383 lb-ft), is roughly equal to Ram's 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (395 hp/410 lb-ft), and like everything else in this segment, is overpowered by General Motors' 6.2-liter Ecotec V8 (420 hp/460 lb-t). Its seven-speed automatic also parks it in between the F-150's six-speed and the eight-speed autos in the Ram and Chevy Silverado.

Like the Titan XD, Nissan is launching the standard Titan with a Crew Cab body style. It will later be joined by Single and King Cab models, and will offer three different bed lengths (5.5, 6.5, and eight feet). On top of that, the same range of trim levels ā€“ S, SV, Pro-4X, SL, and Platinum ā€“ will be offered.

NEW YORK ā€“ Nissan today previewed the upcoming TITAN Crew Cab half-ton pickup, which arrives at Nissan dealers nationwide this summer, at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. The standard bearer of Nissan's family of TITAN pickups, the 2017 TITAN Crew Cab is powered by a new 390-horsepower 5.6-liter EnduranceĀ® V8 gasoline engine.

"The 2017 TITAN half-ton has the same aggressive style of the TITAN XD, but is about a foot shorter in wheelbase," said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc., revealing the new truck during a press conference at the auto show. "They share the same cabs, but while it offers similar ruggedness and durability, the TITAN half-ton's chassis is completely different than XD."

The new TITAN is 228.1 inches long ā€“ 14.7 inches less than the larger TITAN XD (242.8 in.). The 2017 TITAN half-ton will initially launch as a Crew Cab model, with Single and King Cab variants planned for later in the model year.

The new TITAN half-ton will be powered by Nissan's 5.6-liter EnduranceĀ® V8 gasoline engine, assembled in Decherd, Tenn., which produces 390 horsepower. This engine, which is also featured in the TITAN XD V8 Gas, will be mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. A V6 gasoline engine will also be available (details to be announced at a later date).

2016 TITAN XD Crew Cab V8 Gas pricing announced

Announced today in New York was the starting price* of the 2016 TITAN XD Crew Cab at $35,290 for the TITAN XD S Crew Cab 4x2 model. The gasoline V8-equipped TITAN XD will initially be available in five Crew Cab trim levels in both 4x4 and 4x2 drive configurations. All Endurance V8 engine models come standard with a new 7-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control and Downshift Rev Matching.

"The TITAN XD stakes out a unique position in the full-size truck segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. The bold new design combines the capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup," said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. "Now, with the addition of the powerful Endurance V8 gasoline engine, TITAN XD buyers can experience the 'Every Dutyā„¢' TITAN XD two ways."

The new V8-powered TITAN XD also offers a range of popular equipment packages, allowing buyers to fine-tune the exact features they desire for work or family use.

Nissan Trucks at the 2016 New York International Auto Show

Besides the new TITAN and TITAN XD, also on display in the Nissan booth in the truck pavilion of the auto show is the Nissan TITAN Warrior Concept. The Warrior Concept, which was one of the stars of the 2016 North American International Auto Show in January, is an extreme design study showcasing the off-road performance potential of the CumminsĀ® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel-powered TITAN XD.
